When a solid
dissolves in a liquid:
-
The
substance that dissolves is called the solute
-
The liquid
it dissolves in is called the solvent
-
The liquid
formed is a solution
-
A Saturated
solution is one in which no more solute can be dissolved- contains as much
dissolved solid as possible at a particular temperature. There must be some
undissolved solute present.
When you make a
solution, the attractive forces between the particles in the solute are being
broken, and new ones being formed between the solvent particles and solute
particles. Whether a particular solid is soluble in a solvent is reliant on
whether or not the new forces of attraction are strong enough to overcome the
old ones- therefore some solids can be insoluble.
